“On September 14, President Obama nominated Zeitlin to be Representative of the United States of America to the United Nations for U.N. Management and Reform, with the rank of Ambassador.
Zeitlin, a former partner at Goldman, Sachs & Co., founded a company that builds and owns telecommunications infrastructure in India.
But as the Washington Post reported on November 4, a New Delhi court in October “ordered the liquidation of Zeitlin’s wireless firm, Independent Mobile Infrastructure Ltd., which stands accused of failing to pay about $2.4 million in supplies, services and interest to a client.” Zeitlin’s firm disputes the charges and it will be litigated next year.
Other issues dogged Zeitlin, including a 2007 lawsuit from rival American Tower Corp alleging Zeitlin impersonated American Tower Chief Executive James Taiclet when he e-mailed a negative article from CNN.com comparing its business practices to those of Enron to two investors in American Tower Corp.
Zeitlin told the Senate Foreign Relations Committee that “this was a joke that clearly fell flat.”
The Washington Post reported that “By most accounts, Zeitlin, 46, has lived an extraordinary American success story. The son of a Nigerian domestic worker, Zeitlin was adopted by an American family at age 5, raised in Asia and educated in the United States, where he excelled in academics. He graduated from Amherst College magna cum laude with a double major in economics and English and went on to earn an MBA from Harvard University.”
